Proctoring: Introducing Screen Recording

Published:

Introdcution

Ensuring test integrity is critical for fair and reliable assessments. While traditional proctoring methods such as Image or Video Proctoring help monitor candidates through webcams, they do not prevent on-screen malpractice like browsing unauthorized websites, switching tabs, or using coding IDEs.

Why Screen Recording?

With Screen Recording, iMocha gives test administrators deeper visibility into candidate activity by capturing their entire screen throughout the test. This adds an extra layer of security for coding-heavy or high-stakes assessments, helping organizations:

  • Detect and prevent screen-based malpractice.
  • Ensure candidates rely only on their knowledge and skills.
  • Build greater trust in assessment outcomes.
  • Strengthen test security in unsupervised environments.

When combined with Video Proctoring, both the candidate’s face and screen are recorded, offering the highest level of protection against malpractice.

Proctoring Options Available

When creating or inviting candidates to a test, admins can choose from the following proctoring methods:

  1. No Proctoring

    • No monitoring applied.

  2. Image Proctoring

    • Random images are captured every 20–40 seconds.

    • Detects suspicious activity such as multiple faces, no face, or unrecognized faces.

  3. Video Proctoring

    • Continuous live video streaming via webcam.

    • Requires good internet speed. If bandwidth is low, use Image Proctoring.

  4. Screen Recording

    • Records the candidate’s entire screen activity throughout the test.

    • Webcam is not required.

    • Mic permissions are requested to capture sound.

  5. Video Proctoring + Screen Recording

    • Records both webcam and screen activity simultaneously.

    • Requires webcam, microphone, screen share, and stable internet.

    • If bandwidth is low, use Image Proctoring instead.

How to Enable Screen Recording

  1. Go to Test Settings → Proctoring Options.

  2. Choose one of the following:

    • Screen Recording

    • Video Proctoring + Screen Recording

  3. Save and send the test invite to candidates.

Candidate Experience

  • If Screen Recording is enabled:

    • Candidates are prompted to share their entire screen before starting the test.

    • If they don’t share the full screen, they cannot proceed.

  • If Video Proctoring + Screen Recording is enabled:

    • Candidates must allow access to their webcam, microphone, and screen share.

    • If any permission is denied, the test will not start.

Tip for Candidates: Use a stable internet connection and close unnecessary applications for the best experience.

Reports

After the test, admins can review:

  • Screen Recording reports – Playback of the candidate’s on-screen activity.

  • Video + Screen Recording reports – Both screen activity and candidate webcam feed.

These reports help admins validate suspicious behavior and ensure fair assessment results.

Important Notes

  • Screen Recording must be enabled for your account through the payment portal.

  • Existing tests created before this feature will not be affected. They retain their original proctoring settings.

  • For bandwidth-sensitive candidates, consider using Image Proctoring instead.
