How to Review, Validate, and Add Discovered Skills in iMocha Taxonomy?

iMocha helps L&D Managers and HR professionals maintain an accurate and up-to-date skills taxonomy.

The Discovered Skills feature in iMocha helps L&D Managers and HR professionals maintain an accurate and up-to-date skills taxonomy. As employees gain new skills through resumes, job profiles, projects, or self-reported updates, these skills are automatically identified by the system. Instead of being added directly to the taxonomy, they are listed for review—allowing managers to accept, reject, or further evaluate them. This ensures skill accuracy, eliminates redundancies, and helps maintain a clean, structured skill framework aligned with organizational goals.

With this feature, L&D Managers gain greater control and visibility over skill updates, ensuring their skill database remains accurate, current, and aligned with evolving workforce capabilities.

Identifying a Discovered Skill

Discovered skills are automatically identified by iMocha’s platform through various sources such as resumes, job profiles, projects, and employee inputs. These inferred skills are flagged for review and do not directly enter the skills taxonomy. Instead, they appear in the Discovered Skills section where managers can validate and take appropriate action.

Reviewing a Discovered Skill

Reviewing begins with skills marked Yet to Review and allows managers to assess their relevance before accepting or rejecting them. This ensures only verified skills are added to the taxonomy.

Skills that are newly inferred from sources like resumes, job profiles, or employee requests are initially marked as Yet to review. These are the skills awaiting action from L&D Managers or Admins. In this stage, users can:

  • View the name of the discovered skill.
  • See the list of sources it was inferred from.
  • Choose to Accept, Reject the skill.

This is the first step in validating skills before adding them to the organization’s skills taxonomy.

Rejecting a skill

When you click Reject on a skill marked Yet to review, a confirmation pop-up appears on the screen.
Click Yes, reject if you do not wish to review or include the skill in your organization’s taxonomy.
The skill status will be marked as Rejected.

Accepting a skill

When you click Accept on a skill marked Yet to review, a confirmation pop-up appears on the screen.
To proceed, click Yes, Accept — this allows you to add additional information such as domain, sub-domain, skill cluster etc. before adding the skill to your organization’s taxonomy.

After accepting the skill, you can provide additional details, such as the domain, sub-domain, and skill cluster, to enrich the skill's profile within your organization’s taxonomy.

Adjacent Skills

Adjacent skills are those that frequently appear alongside SQL in job descriptions, resumes, certifications, and project work. These skills typically complement SQL and are associated with SQL in various professional roles like data analysts, backend developers, and database administrators.
Click Generate to trigger AI-based generation of adjacent skills for SQL, helping you identify complementary skills commonly used alongside it.

 Post generation:

Click Regenerate if you're not satisfied with the initial list of adjacent skills—this will refresh the suggestions with an alternate set.
You will receive a confirmation message before you proceed with regeneration of skills.

Missing Skills
To ensure your skills taxonomy remains up-to-date and aligned with evolving business needs, iMocha identifies missing skills using AI and employee inputs. These newly inferred skills, which are not yet part of the taxonomy, may appear tagged as Missing Skill(s). This helps organizations maintain a complete and relevant taxonomy.

Adding a Skill to Taxonomy

Once all the required information is filled in, click Add to taxonomy.

The skill will then be added to your iMocha taxonomy.

With iMocha’s Discovered Skills feature, organizations can intelligently evolve their skills taxonomy by identifying and validating skills surfaced through resumes, certifications, job roles, and more.
